Astronomer Rebuked for Endless Staring into Space

MAUNA KEA, Hawaii — Dave Becklyn has watched the stars’ paths for two years at this outpost of the National Astronomy Institute. But now he’s got nothing to study but a grim report from his superiors.

“We suspect that due to exposure to the drowsy drone of cosmic background radiation, and with the universe yawning before him, Dr. Becklyn has been counting sheep instead of galaxies,” said Institute Chairman Franklin Schnoub, who has suspended the astronomer pending a hearing.

The young astronomer says he’s ready to go nova after hearing the chairman’s nebulous claims.

“I’m probing the secrets of the cosmos — the nature of dark matter, the origins of everything — for forty solid hours a week,” Becklyn said. “What looks like inertia is actually intense focus.”

“He’s not finding any new stars, planets, or even earthward-bound asteroids,” Schnoub retored. “We can’t keep funding an empty quest.”

“I didn’t make the heavens, I just record them!” replied an indignant Becklyn, who insisted that he will travel back to the Institute’s wintry Minnesota headquarters next week to meet with his boss.

“Then Schnoub will be seeing some new stars — I guarantee it,” Becklyn said.

Desperate Housewives little “JOKE”

I first read about the JOKE in one online TV news story. I guess by now everybody knows what the nature of the “joke” is. In case you are unaware, the “joke” was a line shot by actress Teri Hatcher to the doctor when he was telling her about being “menopause”, here how’s the line went:

Susan Meyers fired back with this line: “’OK, before we go any further, can I check these diplomas? ‘Coz, I just want to make sure they’re not from some med school in the Philippines.”

After reading it, my mouth formed an “O”, I was aghast that they used this line, not to mention that they mentioned PHILIPPINES. In case some of you are ignorant of the fact, but a lot of health care workers in the USA are Filipinos. I have a sister who is a Nurse Practitioner in SC, another sister who is an Occupational Therapist in SC and my brother-in-law is a Physical Therapist in SC. And I am proud to say they are doing very well in their profession, well- liked and well-respected by their colleagues!

For the information of some of those ignoramus writers, Philippines has a lot of very good medical schools with modern facilities to boast. Besides, when one is a certified health care professional in the USA it means that one has passed the State’s license examination, which means that their standard of intelligence and knowledge are at par with the state’s standard! So to write and deliver that line is not only an insult to the Filipino people but also an insult to your own country!!!! If you can’t figure out how and why it is insulting to your own country then you’re probably too dumb to figure out why we Filipinos are really angry, hurt and offended!!!

I am also surprised at the actress Teri Hatcher, I know that it is not her fault, her being and actress only and not the writer. But then when you are given the script, don’t you read everything first? How come she didn’t catch the writers or director’s attention immediately with the line????

Well, as one American says in one of the message boards I read, ” we Americans are just too sensitive when it comes to our own issues, but we are real insensitive when it comes to other people or race” – thank you for the kind words. And this is true, or else, why was Imus fired from his show??? I bet instead of Philippines, if it says “some med school in the East coast, there will be riots already”.

I hope writers and creators of shows will be more aware with this incident that JOKES are supposed to be funny, but being funny at other people’s expense is not a JOKE, it only bespeaks of your prejudices, insecurities and ignorance.

The One that really broke my Heart

I resigned from an online job a month ago. Much as I like working for the company I had to quit. The assignments were slow in coming in and there are times when there is no work at all for 2 weeks straight and all of a sudden I receive an email in the middle of the night to do a 2 hours research!

I don’t know if these people realize that our time is opposite? or if they have thought that maybe I may have a full schedule already? or have something planned? What frustrates me at times is that some virtual employer or supervisor thinks that offshores employees should be awake and on call 24/7.

It really broke my heart to resign from the company because I really admire and respect the owner who is quite a decent man. But I cannot take the supervisor’s working attitude. She is ok actually, it’s just that I find her to be quite inconsiderate.

She emailed out assignments between 11am -4pm PST and gives out deadline 2 – 3 hours from that time. Hasn’t it entered her mind that I may have some other work planned or scheduled? I mean the company is not paying for all my time and telling me not to work for other company! Besides the time that she emailed out assignments are times when I am sound asleep, as I have mentioned we have opposite time.

Then there are times when there are no assignments for 1 or 2 weeks, because there are several of us “VA” ( virtual assistant ) so she has to spread the projects. This I find it hard too because I cannot sit around and twiddle my thumbs waiting her next assignment. This situation means no income.

After 6 weeks of working under her, I had to bid “adieu” and move on to more stable projects.
